For over two weeks, ECAL has toured the region to mix and mingle with key stakeholders in the industry, to discover their needs and opportunities, and to forge partnerships, projects, and lasting friendships.
It all started in Dubai, as I hosted our first Leaders Lunch at Nuska Beach restaurant at the Jumeirah Beach Hotel, in partnership with Jay Greene and The Sports Playmaker. What a day, and I felt humbled and honoured to host 20 VIP guests to an incredible lunch—great people, good times, and positive discussion.
Following this, I had the privilege of joining the Global Victoria Sports Trade Mission across the Gulf region, through the thriving sport economies of Abu Dhabi (UAE), Riyadh (KSA), and Doha (Qatar). This mission reaffirmed the exceptional strength of the Victorian sports industry and highlighted the significant opportunities for collaboration in the Middle East.
I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to the brilliant team at Global Victoria, Gönül Serbest, Lamia Damerje MDY, and Dominic O’Brien, who masterfully led a delegation of over 20 outstanding Victorian businesses. Their commitment to fostering positive discussion and forging critical connections for our companies was evident throughout the trip

Mission Highlights: Engagement and Opportunity
The itinerary was carefully designed to maximise engagement with key decision-makers and provide exposure to the region’s ambitious sport projects.
In the UAE, we participated in a critical Roundtable session at Zayed Sports City, which featured the valuable insights of special guest Olympian and entrepreneur Stephanie Rice. We also toured the remarkable Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Centre and enjoyed a traditional Majilis Dinner hosted by Aussies in the Gulf.

The KSA leg included an important Roundtable session with the Ministry of Sport in Saudi Arabia, a welcome reception at the Australian Embassy in Riyadh, and a productive traditional lunch with clients Khaled AlOsaimi and Abdullah Alothman from the Saudi Pro League (SPL)

Our time in Qatar featured tours of world-class facilities, including the Aspire Academy, the Qatar Foundation, the Al Shaqab Equestrian Centre, and the Lusail International Circuit. The mission culminated with an impactful Roundtable session at the Australian Embassy in Doha.
Three Core Insights Shaping Our Strategy
The mission provided me with three essential takeaways that will guide our approach to this dynamic market:
Sustained Commitment is Essential
For ECAL, the mission validated the utility of our solution and underscored the importance of consistent presence. Our technology offers genuine value in helping rights holders connect effectively with their audience. We are committed to establishing a strong footprint in the region, investing in our partnerships, and supporting the continued growth of the Gulf’s sports and entertainment sectors.
Similarity of Goals, Differentiation in Approach
While countries across the Gulf share the monumental goal of utilizing major events and community participation as foundational pillars of their future development, their methods are distinct. They are investing heavily in infrastructure and premium events, yet success requires an acute understanding of the specific market dynamics, regulatory environments, and cultural nuances unique to each nation.
Victorian Sports Capability is a Global Force
The delegation collectively demonstrated that the Victorian sports business ecosystem is genuinely world-class. Between our represented companies, we are equipped to serve most major sports rights holders globally, offering a complete spectrum of services. This capability ranges from technical enablement and smart architecture, event registration and management, live streaming, and volunteer programs, through to marketing communications, gaming, esports, and data analytics. Our sports technology industry represents a significant international asset.
